PSYCHOSIS

We Provide Professional Care for Psychotic Disorders and Episodes

Psychotic disorders occur in about 3% of the population, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, brief psychotic disorder, substance-induced psychosis, psychotic depression, bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms, and medical illnesses that result in reality distortion requiring urgent clinical care and ongoing psychiatric treatment.

About Our Psychosis Treatment Program

Psychosis is a disconnection from reality involving delusions, hallucinations, extremely disorganized thinking, and bizarre behavior, severely compromising judgment and functioning. We assess and treat schizophrenia with positive and negative symptoms, schizoaffective disorder with mixed mood episodes and psychosis, delusional disorder with fixed false beliefs but intact functioning, brief psychotic disorder with duration of days to months, postpartum psychosis in new mothers, psychotic depression with mood-congruent delusions, bipolar mania with grandiose or paranoid content derived from stimulants or hallucinogens, substance-induced psychotic states from stimulants or hallucinogens, and medical psychosis secondary to neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders, or metabolic disturbances necessitating extensive medical workup.

Our psychosis program integrates antipsychotic pharmacotherapy with reality testing interventions and family support services. Our dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner conducts emergent psychiatric examinations such as mental status examinations, drug screening, and medical clearance to determine reversible causes of psychotic symptoms. Treatment components include first-generation or second-generation antipsychotic medications for symptom management, cognitive rehabilitation for organization of thought, psychoeducation regarding illness insight and medication compliance, and coordination with emergency psychiatric services when hospitalization is required.

Your path to psychosis stabilization

Our aggressive treatment focuses on immediate symptom management and long-term psychiatric stability by medical means.

Emergency Assessment: Speak to our board-certified practitioner for urgent psychiatric assessment with reality testing, assessment of safety, toxicology screen for substances, and medical assessment to exclude delirium, encephalitis, or other organic etiology for altered mental status.

Stabilization Protocol: Initiate a treatment plan that can involve the initiation of antipsychotic medication, coordination of hospitalization if necessary, education on family crisis, and community mental health referral according to symptom severity and safety issues.

Maintenance Management: Organize continuing psychosis care with regular monitoring of medication adherence, symptoms, side effects, and relapse prevention measures for psychiatric stability maintenance and preventing future episodes.
